James Ochieng Nyambok, a Kenyan resident in Stockholm, has passed away after a long sickness which led to kidney failure.
According to information gathered by Kisumu City News, the late Ochieng passed away at Söder Hospital in Stockholm where he had been admitted at the Intensive Care Unit.
Since his passing, Kenyans in Sweden have set up a Committee to help coordinate the transportation of Ochieng’s body to Kenya for burial.
The Committee is headed by Gideon Magak and it is tasked with collecting funds for the transportation of Ochieng’s body to Kenya.
Other Committee members are: Frank Odhiambo (Vice Chairman), Daphine Achieng (Treasurer), Jane Odada (Vice Treasurer), Odhiambo Opee (Secretary), Nicholas Odhiambo (Organizing Secretary) and Okoth Osewe (Information Desk).
Following the news, Kenyans and friends alike have been plunged into deep mourning. Several messages of condolences have been sent to the bereaved Ochieng family.
Mrs Hellen Opwapo, the widow of Opwapo Ogae (who was among the 1982 coup leaders), said that the loss of Ochieng is a big blow to the Kenyan community in Sweden. Joshua Oyugi, an Enterprise Solution Architect, said that Kenyans had lost an elder.
Others who have sent their condolences are Mark Gaya, Mwalimu Jacqueline, Patrick Odhiambo, Laban Mberi, Pamela Omiti, Elizabeth Nyaore, Florence Akoth, Gerry Midenyo, Nancy Osumba, Theodore Kiaka, Joseph Goga, Caroline Omino, Gideon Nyakwar Oyundi, Rukia Amina, Bryan Arwa, Antony Ngugi, Susan Gaya, Jimmy Oyundi, Lenza Odhiambo, Teresa Mawa, Prisca Forsman, Nancy Wandaka, Mwalimu Peter Ongolo among others.
Mr. Ochieng Nyambok was a respected Kenyan elder in Stockholm who is also credited with having facilitated the relocation of many Kenyans to Sweden during the 70s and 80s.
In a statement released by the Ochieng Nyambok Committee, Kenyans are seeking to raise Ksh 1 million to facilitate body transport and to purchase tickets for members of Ochieng’s family to attend the late Kenyan’s burial in Kenya.
A WhatsApp group has been set up to help coordinate the fund-raising. In a short message sent to the group, Chairman Gideon thanked members for their support of the bereaved Ochieng family and appealed to members to help the Committee achieve its objectives.
The late Ochieng is survived by his widow Millent Nyambok, two sons, one daughter and four grandchildren.
