The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is actively probing into the contentious appointment of an assistant chief in Kisumu County’s Kisumu West subcounty, amid allegations of malpractice in the selection process.
The Kisumu West subcounty deputy county commissioner, Maurice Wanyonyi, has been summoned by the EACC to submit a plethora of documents relevant to the recruitment, including the job advertisement, applicant list, application letters, and credentials of both the candidates and those shortlisted. The commission is delving deep, requesting comprehensive details on the interview process, encompassing schedules, minutes, scoring details, and the final steps leading to the appointee’s installation, including their personal employment file and official appointment letter.
Simultaneously, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o faces a legal hurdle, challenged by Kisumu residents George Abwajo and Phillip Pande over alleged irregularities in shortlisting 10 chief officers. The duo has launched a legal offensive, urging the county assembly to halt the vetting and approval of these candidates until their lawsuit reaches a conclusion. The petitioners advocate for a re-advertisement of these roles, insisting on adherence to constitutional guidelines, including fair regional and gender representation, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities and youth.
In a closely linked development, the Kisumu County Public Service Board has shortlisted over 50 candidates for various chief officer roles, setting the stage for forthcoming interviews. This list showcases a vibrant mosaic of professionals, representing a spectrum of expertise and roles within the county’s administrative framework.
