A Quick Status Report of Key Kisumu County Development Projects

Kisumu County, in recent years, has embarked on a series of ambitious development projects aimed at transforming the region’s social, economic, and infrastructural landscape. These projects, diverse in nature, range from infrastructural upgrades to initiatives aimed at tackling food insecurity, improving transport, and enhancing urban aesthetics.

One of the key projects underway is the transformation of slums into modern residential areas, a Sh1.4 billion initiative under the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project (KISIP 2). This project targets several slums, including Nyalenda, Obunga, Manyatta, Migosi, Nyawita, Kaloleno, Shauri Moyo, Kibuye, and Muhoroni. The focus of this initiative is not only on housing but also on improving roads, street lighting, water and sewer lines, and solid waste management facilities. Chaju Builders and Octagon firm are two of the contractors involved in this extensive project

In response to the pressing issue of food insecurity, affecting 71.3% of Kisumu’s population, the county has launched its first Food Systems Strategy. This strategy, developed in collaboration with various development partners including the Food and Agriculture Organization, Maseno University, and USAID, aims to create a more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable food system. The strategy encompasses various elements, from enhancing local vegetable production to fostering urban garden activities, with a strong focus on involving youth and women in farming activities

A significant infrastructural development in the region is the planned extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Kisumu. This extension is anticipated to catalyze economic growth, particularly by boosting lake transport and facilitating trade with neighboring countries. The project, which aims to complete 35% of the work by the end of 2024, is expected to revitalize Kisumu Port and enhance the region’s connectivity.

These developments in Kisumu County illustrate a concerted effort by the local government and its partners to address key challenges in housing, food security, transportation, and economic development. These projects, once fully realized, are poised to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents and position Kisumu as a key economic hub in the region.
