In a tragic event on Friday night near the Boya area on the Ahero-Awasi road in Kisumu County, a devastating collision between a bus and a tuk-tuk resulted in the loss of four lives. Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Mwangi reported that the accident occurred when the Nairobi-bound bus attempted a risky maneuver to overtake a lorry, subsequently crashing head-on into an oncoming tuk-tuk.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the tuk-tuk became trapped beneath the bus, dragging the vehicle and its occupants along the highway for approximately 60 meters. The catastrophic event led to the immediate death of all three passengers and the driver of the tuk-tuk, marking a somber moment on the Kisumu-Nairobi road near Awasi in Kisumu’s Nyando Sub-County. Remarkably, those aboard the bus emerged unscathed from the incident.
Police were swift to arrive at the scene, where they undertook the grim task of retrieving the bodies from the wreckage. The deceased were transported to Ahero sub-county hospital mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to be conducted. The scene of the accident, occurring at approximately 11pm, adds to the recent string of road fatalities in the region, further emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures.
The wreckage of the tuk-tuk was towed to Ahero Police Station, where it will be held pending further investigations. Similarly, the bus involved in the accident was also driven to the same station as part of the ongoing inquiry into the precise circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
This incident has not only escalated the death toll in Kisumu County but also highlighted the critical dangers associated with overtaking maneuvers on busy roads. It serves as a grim reminder of the importance of strict adherence to road safety regulations to prevent such devastating losses in the future.
